Fighting Each Other

Remember: as long as they keep us fighting against each other — blacks against whites, Christians against Muslims, “natives” against immigrants, kneelers against standers — then we aren’t fighting against them. That leaves them free to advance their own agenda, and they will keep destroying our environment, making us work harder for less money, taking away our choices, whittling away at our rights. And they will keep getting richer and richer.

The Flag Stands For Our Right Not to Stand

A year ago, when I wrote this short post about Colin Kaepernick’s silent protest, I never would’ve guessed that we would still be talking about this issue a year later, or that the President of the United States would be using it as yet another wedge to divide America. But here we are.Continue reading “The Flag Stands For Our Right Not to Stand”

Eyes on the Prize: Focus On 2018 and Stop Fixating on Third Parties

Oh my god people. Stop talking about a third party. Stop talking about the Greens. Stop talking about Bernie. Just stop.

Every time the subject of voting comes up, it’s all I hear: “Democrats are terrible. We need a third party.”

Everything you say is completely reasonable: that we can’t just sit around and wait for another party to come and save us; that we have to start now to build one; that it will take hard work and time; and that if we don’t start now, when?

It’s all true. But you know what? It doesn’t matter. Not at this point. Right now, we have a job to do. Focusing all your energy on building a third party for the 2020 election completely misses the point.

We must focus on the battle that is before us. And that is 2018.Continue reading “Eyes on the Prize: Focus On 2018 and Stop Fixating on Third Parties”

A Battle Plan for 2018

Since the day Donald Trump was elected I have lurched wildly between feelings of frustration, heartbreak, dismay, fear, sadness, and depression. I spend too much time every day reading news coverage of his outrageous acts, devouring analysis, searching for optimism. And I spend far too much time lost in the insane comments on news articles and social media posts hoping for explanations and rationality that will help me make sense of why we handed over our country to a man who is completely un-equipped to handle the enormity of the task.Continue reading “A Battle Plan for 2018”

Stop Calling Donald Trump Crazy

After Trump’s most recent twitter tirade, in which in personally attacked Mika Brzezinski’s intelligence, sanity and appearance (which is quite a lot to cover in a single tweet, even for him, so he used two) the Left once again began calling into question the man’s sanity, emotional state and fitness for the office.Continue reading “Stop Calling Donald Trump Crazy”

Where to Find the Control We Seek

When I started this blog I didn’t intend for it to be all about politics. I thought it would be about lots of different things… all of the weighty and important topics in life that I talk about with my friends. I never expected it to be all Trump all the time. But then, I never expected the political situation in this country to take such a dramatic turn. Unfortunately, for the last few months, I’ve been utterly preoccupied with keeping up with the news (fake, alternative and regular) and with trying to do my part. Even with all of the craziness, though, I’ve still been thinking—though not writing—a lot about life.

Happy Birthday, Susan B. Anthony

“Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.”

“I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.”

“There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.”

“It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union. And we formed it, not to give the blessings of liberty, but to secure them; not to the half of ourselves and the half of our posterity, but to the whole people – women as well as men.”

“Organize, agitate, educate, must be our war cry.”

Susan B. Anthony was born on February 15, 1820.

She was a tireless social reformer and advocate for women’s rights and played a pivotal role in securing the vote for American women.

It’s Up to Us to Save Ourselves

If you’re waiting for Republican lawmakers to break ranks and do the right thing, don’t hold your breath.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans who are becoming increasingly concerned about Trump’s agenda, his lack of knowledge of international relations, or any of a number of other things, or maybe even hoping for impeachment, I’m here to tell you that help isn’t coming. This time, it’s up to you:Continue reading “It’s Up to Us to Save Ourselves”

Thanks, Donald! I’m Learning So Much

Who says Donald Trump’s administration will be bad for education? I’ve already learned so much!

For example: I’ve already learned the definition of the word Kleptocracy

(noun: government by those who seek chiefly personal gain and status at the expense of the governed)

and also Plutocracy

(noun: government by the wealthy).

I’ve learned a lot about citizens’ rights under our immigration laws.

I’ve learned so much about the rise of Hitler in 1930s Germany.

I’ve also learned how to spell demagoguery (that “u” kept throwing me off), and white-Supremacist (lower-case “w” capital “S”). Same pattern with neo-Nazi and anti-Semitism.

These last few weeks have been a real education. Can’t wait for more.
