You can add Attorney General Bill Barr to the list of people happily enabling Trump’s demagogic tendencies. After blatantly mischaracterizing the results of the Mueller investigation, Barr’s most recent move has been to intervene in the sentencing of Trump loyalist, convicted liar, and self-proclaimed dirty trickster, Roger Stone. Barr’s interference has officially ended any pretense that American justice in the Trump era is fair and impartial, or that our criminal justice system is immune from political influence. This move has dramatically undercut one of the foundational tenets of the American system.Continue reading “A Man Above the Law”
This is the week that I lost my faith.
This is the week that Donald Trump was acquitted of charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress by a Republican Senate so cowed by his bullying that they are willing to empower him to shred the very document that they have sworn to protect and defend. He has now claimed total vindication and is completely untethered from any real or perceived limitations on his self-enriching, autocratic, vindictive tendencies.Continue reading “The Week That America Died”
[January 29, 2020: While watching the sham of an Impeachment Trial today, I was reminded of this post which I originally wrote in 2016, shortly after the election. Sadly, I realized that we are now living in my nightmare scenario.]
I’ve been told that a good way to help with anxiety is to identify in detail the thing you are most concerned will happen. This is the Worst-Case Scenario approach, and the theory is that sometimes specifically identifying what we fear can help us realize that our anxiety may be unfounded. So I challenged myself to name the thing that I am most afraid of regarding a Trump Presidency.Continue reading “Repost: My Fear and the (New) American Way”
Oh my god people. Stop talking about a third party. Stop talking about the Greens. Stop talking about Bernie. Just stop.
Every time the subject of voting comes up, it’s all I hear: “Democrats are terrible. We need a third party.”
Everything you say is completely reasonable: that we can’t just sit around and wait for another party to come and save us; that we have to start now to build one; that it will take hard work and time; and that if we don’t start now, when?
It’s all true. But you know what? It doesn’t matter. Not at this point. Right now, we have a job to do. Focusing all your energy on building a third party for the 2020 election completely misses the point.
We must focus on the battle that is before us. And that is 2018.Continue reading “Eyes on the Prize: Focus On 2018 and Stop Fixating on Third Parties”
Since the day Donald Trump was elected I have lurched wildly between feelings of frustration, heartbreak, dismay, fear, sadness, and depression. I spend too much time every day reading news coverage of his outrageous acts, devouring analysis, searching for optimism. And I spend far too much time lost in the insane comments on news articles and social media posts hoping for explanations and rationality that will help me make sense of why we handed over our country to a man who is completely un-equipped to handle the enormity of the task.Continue reading “A Battle Plan for 2018”
If you’re waiting for Republican lawmakers to break ranks and do the right thing, don’t hold your breath.
If you’re one of the millions of Americans who are becoming increasingly concerned about Trump’s agenda, his lack of knowledge of international relations, or any of a number of other things, or maybe even hoping for impeachment, I’m here to tell you that help isn’t coming. This time, it’s up to you:Continue reading “It’s Up to Us to Save Ourselves”
